About the Author

Four decades. More than twenty airlines. Over 20,000 hours in the air, flying aircraft including the Boeing 747, 777, 787, and the Airbus A320 family.

On 11 March 2011, he was Captain of a flight from Hong Kong to Tokyo. They landed at Narita three minutes before a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck, the fourth largest ever recorded. The taxiway shook like it was made of water. The airport was evacuated. For seven hours, he sat in the cockpit watching the news, asking himself one question: if a tsunami reaches this runway, do I take off?

That question didn’t leave him. Final Descent is where it went.

The cockpit procedures are real. The emergencies are real. The decisions Jonny makes under pressure are drawn from four decades of making them. The rest is fiction. Mostly.
